Chapter 10: A Bittersweet Reunion
I never anticipated that my encounter with Shen Ke would be under such a ludicrous circumstance. I had just been promoted to project manager and organized a team-building event at a club for my department. Amidst the clinking of glasses, a commotion outside caught our attention. A woman’s wailing pierced through the air:
“Why didn’t you answer any of my calls? I must have called you over twenty times!”
Eager for a spectacle, our department’s newcomer, Hao Yue, volunteered to go out and investigate. I was about to encourage everyone to continue eating and drinking when Hao Yue burst through the door, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
She grabbed my arm and pulled me outside. “Sister Le Ning, you have to come see this. I guarantee you’ll be satisfied! Oh, today is truly a day of double celebrations…”
Amidst the hustle and bustle, my gaze fell on Bai Wenyan, whose face still bore traces of bruising. She appeared much older than I remembered, her face sallow and bloated, yet her body was as thin as a withered bean sprout. She was clutching a man tightly.
This man, however, was a stark contrast to her. Dressed in a suit with a tie and wearing rimless glasses that screamed the latest trend, he looked like he stepped out of an anime.
It was none other than Shen Ke.
I was grateful that I had exposed his true colors to everyone long ago. Otherwise, who knows how many girls would have been deceived by his appearance?
Bai Wenyan continued her tearful tirade:
“How could you spend the money for our daughter’s kindergarten fees on a meal with them?”
She pointed an accusing finger at two men and two women by the door, one of whom had gray hair and looked displeased.
Is this your wife? Didn’t you say you were single?”
Her words turned Shen Ke’s face scarlet with anger. He pushed Bai Wenyan away roughly:
“Who told you to come here? Get back home this instant!”
Bai Wenyan stumbled and cried out, “Shen Ke!”
This caught the attention of the gray-haired woman, who then became serious:
“Your name is Shen Ke?”
“I remember now, you’re that despicable man exposed online before. No wonder you looked familiar! No wonder you wouldn’t tell us your real name.”
“You talked about investing in art together? What a lie!”
“Cheater, disgusting!”
They left with disdainful looks, and Shen Ke seemed to deflate instantly.
He glared at Bai Wenyan, his hands balled into fists: “Do you have to ruin me to be satisfied?”
Bai Wenyan’s eyes were filled with tears: “How could I ruin you? I don’t have enough time to love you!”
Hao Yue couldn’t help but laugh, and her laughter drew Shen Ke and Bai Wenyan’s attention.
Upon seeing me, they both froze.
Hao Yue whispered excitedly in my ear: “Sister Le Ning, look at you, then look at them, it’s a world of difference!”
She was also one of the original onlookers!
Seeing Shen Ke again, my heart was calm.
One must be open and decisive in ending all relationships that are not worth it, including hatred.
But apparently, Shen Ke did not have this kind of cultivation.
“Le Ning!”
He lunged at me frantically but was held back by the crowd.
He took off his rimless glasses, his eyes brimming with tears, and knelt down to me weakly: “I know I was wrong, please forgive me, please let me go, I really can’t go on…”
But all he received were sounds of contempt.
“Hey, hey, hey, don’t touch my Sister Le Ning!”
“Who are you trying to scam? If you can’t live, there’s always the crematorium, get lost, scumbag!”
Amidst the shouting, Shen Ke was forcibly dragged away by Bai Wenyan.
This time, without any action from me, he was completely gone.
